Patch box
Oval enamel patch box wih a hinged lid, with a polychrome transfer, after a Rodney Shackell drawing, depicting the Battle of the Saints, 1782. The battle scene has a rope twist border and is flanked by naval trophies. The coat of arms of George III is on the base inside. The base is coloured turquoise with the maker's name and the year of manufacture. On the lid, on a ribbon scroll is inscribed: 'Les Saintes'. Inside the lid: 'In April 1782, Sir George Rodney brought the French fleet, under de Grasse, to battle near the islands of Les Saintes. Good gunnery and bold ship-handling resulted in the capture of the French flag-ship Ville de Paris, and victory for the British in their defence of Jamaica.' On the base; 'MARITIME ENGLAND. MADE IN BILSTON IN THE YEAR 1982.'
