Patch box

Oval enamel patch box wih a hinged lid, with a polychrome transfer, after a Rodney Shackell drawing, depicting the Bombardment of Algiers, 1816. The battle scene has a rope twist border and is flanked by naval trophies. On a ribbon scroll below: 'ALGIERS'. The coat of arms of George III is on the base inside. Inscribed inside the lid: 'In August 1816, under the command of Admiral Lord Exmouth, a combined English and Dutch fleet, bombarded the stronghold in which the Dey of Algiers held hundreds of Christian seamen as slaves. The Dey was finally forced to release over three thousand men of many nationalities and religions.' The base is coloured blue with the maker's name and the year of manufacture, 'MARITIME ENGLAND. MADE IN BILSTON IN THE YEAR 1982.' Contained in a blue velvet-lined box.
