Box commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) based on a medal. Obverse: The Admiral's bust, (left profile), undraped. Legend: 'HOR . VICECOM . NELSON OB PATRIAM PVGNANDO MORT . OCT XXI . MDCCCV.' (Died fighting for his country). Outer legend on a garter belt 'ENGLAND'S ADMIRAL NELSON DUKE OF BRONTE'. Reverse: Bellona, winged, laureate, bundle of thunderbolts in raised right hand, stepping over the sea, on which in distance antique galleys are fighting. Legend: 'IPSE BELLI FVLMEN.' (Himself the thunderbolt of war). Outer legend on a garter belt 'RECORD OF NAVAL VALOUR. EVERY MAN HAS DONE HIS DUTY'. The box contains twelve circular coloured mezzotints of British naval victories published by Edward Orme as follows: (1) Ld Rodney's victory (2) Ld Howe's victory (3) Lord Nelson boarding St Joseph (4) Ld Duncan's Victory (5) Battle of the Nile (6) Victory at Copenhagen (7) Sir Richard Strachan's victory (8) Ld Nelson, Trafalgar (9) Boarding the Chesapeake (10) Bonaparte on the Northumberland (11) Storming of Algiers (12) Slaves delivered Algiers. Additional text is printed on the reverse.
