Launching casket
Launching casket HMS 'Espoir' 1860, containing a mallet, chisel and a pricker. The casket is made of walnut with a silver plate on the lid, the interior is lined with blue plush. Inscribed on the plate on the lid: 'Espoir 5 guns'. The dimensions of the vessel are listed inside the lid beneath a picture of the ship. HMS 'Espoir' commenced building in April 1859 and was launched in 1860. Between 1860 and 1864, she was engaged in suppressing the slave trade in West Africa. She returned to these duties until 1867. In 1869 she was converted to a dredger working at Sheerness and was renamed YC 19. She was boken up a Bermuda in 1881.
