Tobacco box

A tobacco box in copper, originally gilt, with a hinged lid supported by four small round feet. The lid is engraved with roses and has a silver plaque in the centre. The plaque is engraved: 'Lewis Carr' and around it on the lid: 'It is no repining can losses repay, Take a pipe with me & smoke sorrow away'. The sides have a fleur-de-lis at either end. The base is engraved with an anchor, moon, stars, sun, birds and a pierced heart. There is a ship within a wreath in the centre with 'Perseus 1782' engraved below. Lewis Carr was on 'Perseus's' muster roll from 1 July 1781, rated Landsman. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman on 1 March 1783 and paid off on 20 March 1783.
