Snuff box
Snuff box commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). An oval tortoiseshell box with the lid hinged 3/4 of the way from the end. A medallion is set into the lid under glass with both sides visible. The lid also has a gold olive wreath and anchor inset in the surface. Medal obverse: The Admiral's bust (left) with pigtail, in uniform with ribbon and star of Bath and medal round the neck. Legend: 'ADMIRAL LORD NELSON.' Reverse: Nelson's ship nearing the shore, on which Britannia holds out a wreath towards him, spear in her left hand. Near her an altar inscribed 'AUG . 1 1798.', the date of the Battle of the Nile. An anchor and the union shield lean against it. Legend: 'HAIL! VIRTUOUS HERO. THY VICTORIES WE ACKNOWLEDGE AND THY GOD.' Exergue: 'RETURND TO ENGLAND NOV 5 1800.'
