The End of the Day
Oil painting on canvas board, unframed, signed by the artist. It depicts a sunset seascape with a boat in the foreground. In red felt tip pen on the reverse: 'TAKEN FROM "ROUND HILL, MACKAY, NORTH QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA. BRIAN GIFFNEY. THE END OF THE DAY.' In black biro: 'The artist, Brian Gifney apparently painted many of these scenes in Queensland. Real name, in fact, Brian Smith, joined 'Port Townsville' late May 1969 to take the place of a steward taken sick. This way he obtained a passage home to the UK. I was paid for it too, as an assistant steward at £51-2-6 per month. While on board the M.V. 'Port Townsville', he painted the ship's purser a MR V.E.A Brooks. A Gift to Mr V. Brooks Purser M.V. Ports Townsend.'
