Cut-paper picture
Cut paper picture (découpage) commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). The design is arranged in three tiers with a border. In the centre of the top tier, a naval personage is shown in profile flanked by trophies and below this is a heart pierced with arrows and surrounded by flowers. On either side is a couple drinking at a table beneath an open bird cage, (the bird is on a perch outside - one bird is missing). These domestic scenes are framed by peacocks and acrobats holding birds. The second tier shows a carriage drawn by four horses on the left with a crest of St George and the dragon on the door: on the right, a cobbler's workshop, a house and a tavern. The lowest tier depicts a naval battle flanked by a foul anchor to the left, a pierced heart and flowers to the right. The picture has a gilt, beaded wooden frame with a black and gold inner border on glass.
