Nautilus shell

Engraved nautilus shell commemorating Nelson's victories. It depicts St George and the dragon, Britannia and the British lion,and Victory seated on the prow of an antique galley writing the names of Nelson's victories on a shield. The figures of Britannia and Victory are placed above maps of the globe. The centre of the shell is engraved with an animal head. C.H. Wood was a specialist in this 19th-century art form and a similar shell by him was exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. For the full inscriptions see the online text in the 'Notebook' field.
