The wounded Nelson carried below deck at Trafalgar
Figure group depicting the wounded Nelson being carried below deck on 'Victory' by two seaman. He is giving an order to Captain Hardy who stands behind him. The Italian sculptor, Constantino Barbella (1852-1925), specialized in small terracotta and bronze narrative groups. The piece is signed on the side of the base 'C Barbella Roma Tivoli 20.6.1905 / Fond Nelli Roma', (Nelli being the founder). It was produced for the Trafalgar centenary in 1905, presumably as an edition of which there are other copies, since Barbella's output was enormous and much of it reproduced. This item is from the Sutcliffe-Smith Collection, on loan from 1946 and purchased in July 1974.
