Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805)

Bronze statuette of Nelson on a marble column in four pieces (column base, column, column top, statuette). The base is rectangular inset with pink and grey marble on either side. The column is white and fluted. The statuette is bronze, full length, with hat and tall coil of rope as a support behind the figure (sword missing). The name 'NELSON' is on a bronze plaque fixed top centre on the front of the column base. The capital of the column is chipped and cracked. This item may have been inspired by Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square (structurally completed in 1843) or an alternative design to it. It is part of the Sutcliffe-Smith Collection, on loan to the Museum from 1946 and purchased in July 1974.
