Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1758-1805

Bust of Nelson on a turned oak base, decorated with a gilt plaque depicting HMS Victory, the whole on a rough block of oak bearing two inscribed copper plaques.

The inscriptions read: 'Nelson, This bust contains Victory copper for Nelson centenary Oct 21 1905 presented by British & Foreign Sailors' Society ERVII' / ' This bust of Horatio Viscount Nelson composed of copper and oak taken from the flagship Victory, is presented to His Majesty King Edward the Seventh in the tenth year of is Majesty's reign by the British and Foreign Sailors' Society as a souvenir of the Nelson centenary celebrations./ This bust which had been accepted by King Edward VII shortly before His Majesty's lamented death was received by King George V (Patron of the Society) on October 21 1910 being the 105th anniversary of the death of Nelson.'

This item is part of the Walter Collection, on loan from 1935 and purchased in 1960.
