Portrait plaque
Portrait plaque depicting Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). Miniature painter Robert Bowyer and his niece, Catherine Andras had sittings from Nelson during his last shore leave in August and September 1805. Bowyer's miniature is only known from prints, but Catherine Andras's wax profiles were reproduced in quantity from a mould. This early cast is has the artist's signature incised under the shoulder: 'C. Andras 1805'. The success of this profile led to a commission for Andras to model the head and hand of the effigy of Nelson at Westminster Abbey. The Andras profile is also the source of the later versions produced by Tassie. Nelson had sat for Andras on a previous occasion in 1800. In the following year, she was awarded the larger silver pallet of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts Manufactures and Commerce, for this (now missing) Nelson profile and another of Princess Charlotte.
