Casket

Freedom casket presented to Admiral of the Fleet Lord Cunningham (1882-1963).

The Freedom of the City of Manchester in a casket of silver and mahogany, standing on a tiered plinth, surmounted by a double sided silver coat of arms of the City of Manchester, with motto 'CONCILIO ET LABORE'. A plaque in front of the casket is inscribed below a naval crown: 'This casket containing the Scroll conferring the Freedom of the City of Manchester was presented to ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET THE LORD CUNNINGHAM OF HYNDHOPE K.T., G.C.B., D.S.O. MCMXLV'.
There are pierced silver floral panels on each side of the inscription, and also at the back on each side of an unengraved silver plaque. On the ends are silver Tudor rose paterae.

The lid is hinged and the casket is lined with purple velvet. It contains the vellum scroll mounted on silk, hand-lettered and embellished with the coat of arms of the City of Manchester at the top, and dated 3 October 1945.
