Austrian Ensign (1786-1869)

Austrian ensign associated with Master's Mate Stephen Hilton (1787-1872) who served in 'Minotaur' at the Battle of Trafalgar 1805. It may have come from the ship's flag locker or from a prize. The flag is divided horizontally into red, white, red stripes. In the centre, a shield of arms with the same device, surrounded by a faded yellow border and surmounted by a crown. The flag is made of wool bunting, hand-sewn with the design appliquéd. There are original hand-sewn repairs at the fly end, indicating that the flag has been flown. A hand-sewn linen strip has been added to the upper edge. The linen hoist is a machine-sewn replacement, probably added in the 1930s.
