Wine coaster

One of a pair of wine coasters (bottle or decanter stands for use on the table) commemorating the voyages of Captain James Cook (1728-79).

Silver-gilt circular coaster, the inside engraved with a map of the Eastern Hemisphere showing Cook's track (PLT0032 shows the Western Hemisphere). Inside the rim is the crest of the Bridge family 'A chaplet of oak or, between two wings elevated sable, each charged with a bridge of one arch embattled, and at each end a tower proper' with the motto 'LIBERTAS'. The outside is engraved with the twelve signs of the zodiac. The coaster is mounted on a wooden base with green baize at the bottom.

For two hundred years the coasters were owned by descendants of the silversmith John Bridge (1755-1834) of the firm of Rundell and Bridge, Court Jewellers, Gold and Silversmiths, whose Partners included Paul Storr.
