Sauce tureen

Silver sauce tureen and cover, made to commemorate the marriage of Samuel Hood, Baron Bridport (1788-1868) to Charlotte Mary Nelson in 1810.

The tureen is one of a pair with PLT0068. It has a gadrooned rim and handles and stands on claw feet. The tureen is engraved on one side with the arms of Hood impaling Nelson, representing the linking of these two great naval families. The supporters are Hood's, as is the motto 'VENTIS SECUNDIS' (with following winds) and the baron's coronet. The Nelson side of the arms has the 'TRAFALGAR' augmentation as added after the battle. On the other side and on the cover is the Hood crest (anchor and a Cornish chough) with the baron's coronet. The lid and base are matched up by incised dots.

Samuel Hood, 2nd Baron Bridport, married William, 1st Earl Nelson's daughter and heir Charlotte Mary in 1810. William Nelson was the brother of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson. Samuel and Charlotte Mary subsequently had seven children, and on the death of William Earl Nelson in 1835, Lady Charlotte succeeded to the Sicilian title of Bronte and received Admiral Nelson's legacy of silver, orders and medals.

This tureen, originally one of a set of at least four, was sold with other Bridport family silver and Nelson relics in the Bridport sale at Christie's on 12 July 1895. The pair of tureens was purchased by Thomas J. Barrett, Chairman of A & F Pears Ltd, a collector and historian, who gave them with other items to Greenwich Hospital in 1915.
