Sauce tureen

Silver sauce tureen and cover, with the arms of Hood impaling Nelson, for Samuel, Baron Bridport (1788-1868). The tureen is one of a pair with PLT0067. It has a gadrooned rim and handles, and stands on claw feet. The tureen is engraved on one side with the arms of Hood impaling Nelson, with the motto 'VENTIS SECUNDIS' (with following winds) and is surmounted by a Baron's coronet. The Nelson arms have the 'TRAFALGAR' augmentation as added after the Battle.
On the other side and on the cover is the Hood crest with the baron's coronet. The lid and base are matched by incised dots.
Samuel Hood, Baron Bridport (1788-1868) married William Nelson's daughter and heir Charlotte Mary in 1810 - they subsequently had seven children. William Nelson was the brother of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson.
