Silver cup and cover

Two-handled silver cup and cover commemorating the naval services of Arthur William Acland Hood, Baron Hood of Avalon (1824-1901).

The cup has scroll handles decorated at the top with acanthus leaves, and a raised circular foot. The body is engraved on one side with the Hood crest (an anchor and a Cornish chough) and on the other with a baron's coronet. The domed cover, which is by a different maker and two years later than the cup, is surmounted by a silver Admiralty pattern anchor with a swivelling shackle. There are silver butterfly nuts inside the lid to secure the anchor.

One side is engraved below the Hood crest: 'ZEALOUS.'; the lower part of the body is inscribed: 'SERVICES SYRIA 1840..CRIMEAN WAR 1853-54..CHINA WAR 1856-57. COMMANDED ACORN 1856 TO 1858..PYLADES 1862 TO 1866. EXCELLENT 1866 TO 1869..MONARCH 1874 TO 1876 AND CHANNEL SQUADRON 1879 TO 1881.’.

The other side is engraved on the lower part of the body: 'SERVICES AT ADMIRALTY DIRECTOR NAVAL ORDNANCE 1869 TO 1874.

Hood was created Baron Hood of Avalon in February 1892, presumably the occasion for inscribing this cup.
