Silver salver

Salver presented to John Harper Narbeth CB CBE MVO RCNC on his departure from the Admiralty, 1923.

Silver salver of quatrefoil form with a scrolled border, mirror surface, and standing on four scroll feet. It is inscribed: 'Presented to J. H. NARBETH, ESQ., C.B., C.B.E., M.V.O. as a token of esteem by his colleagues of the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors at the Admiralty on his retirement, 1923'.

Narbeth donated the salver to the NMM in 1940, writing: 'it marks an epoch in the history of Naval Construction and in the development of the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors […] the occasion of the gift were unique in the annals of the RCNC. On no previous occasion had a retiring officer received such universal friendship & affection of his colleagues, & on no previous (or later) occasion has any such like commemoration and gift been arranged'.
