Silver chamber candlestick

Chamber candlestick with the initials of Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson (1758-1805).

Plain Sheffield plate with the silver plating worn through in places, some dents, and the extinguisher missing. The candlestick has a socket and a lever in the stem with a sliding knob to raise the candle. The stem is mounted in a deep-sided conical bowl or tray, on one side of which is a half handle with a thumbpiece and a slot to take an extinguisher. The tray and socket are gadrooned, and the outside of the tray is engraved with 'N' surmounted by a viscount's coronet and 'B' with a duke's coronet.

A similar Sheffield plate example with Earl Nelson's crests and coronets on silver thumbpiece (which is perhaps a later addition) is in a private collection.
