Wine coaster
Wine coaster or decanter stand owned by Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson (1758-1805).
One of a pair of circular silver wine coasters with gadrooned rims (the other is PLT0136). Turned wooden base with a central silver engraved medallion, with Nelson's chelengk and 'SAN JOSEF' crests. The base is covered with green baize.
Four matching coasters are in a private collection. On 8 December 1805 Nelson paid his silversmith John Salter eighteen shillings to varnish and polish six bottle stands.
The Museum's two stands came through Miss Frances Girdlestone, who was descended from Nelson's sister Susannah, and were purchased at Sotheby's 30 April 1936 by Sir Percy Malcolm-Stewart for the NMM.
