Sheffield plate muffin dish
Muffin dish owned by Nelson's daughter Horatia, later Horatia Nelson Ward (1801-81).
Plain circular muffin dish, the base hollow to contain hot water to heat the dish, and with a filling spout and screw cap. The circular lid is domed with a ball knop. The base and lid are both engraved with two putti holding a ribbon inscribed 'HORATIA 29th Octr 1807'.
29 October was the date given by Lady Hamilton as Horatia's birthday, although it was actually circa 29 January 1801. The dish was a birthday present from Lady Hamilton to Horatia. It descended to Horatia's great grandaughter Miss M. H. Johnson of Tenterden, and was bequeathed by her to the NMM in 1974.
