Decanter stand

Decanter stand shaped as the 'Elephant's' jollyboat, in commemoration of the Battle of Copenhagen, 1901.

Silver-mounted papier maché, double decanter stand in the shape of a boat with two silver-mounted circular divisions for wine bottles or decanters. Made of red papier maché with silver rims and a flat black base, a silver strip inscribed with ships' names along each side of the boat with a small silver plaque bearing the monogram 'JF'. There is an inscribed oval silver plaque on the stern and another smaller maker's plaque inside the stern.

The silver strips are inscribed: 'EDGAR ARDENT GLATTON ISIS BELLONA AGAMEMNON FRIGATES &c / &c Bombs POLYPHEMUS RUSSEL DEFIANCE MONARCH GANGES ELEPHANT, ld Nelson'.

The plaque on the outside of the stern is inscribed: 'ELEPHANT'S JOLLY BOAT, A BUMPER TO Ld NELSON who Bravely went on Shore to Save COPENHAGEN 2nd April 1801’. The small plaque inside the stern is inscribed 'Richd Thomas, GOLDSMITH, No 3 Strand'.

A similar decanter stand representing the 'Edgar's' jolly boat was made for Captain George Murray, and is mounted on a wheeled carriage. Another jolly boat made completely in silver, by John Emes, 1799, is in the Nelson collection at Lloyd's.
