Tablespoon from HMS Encounter
Tablespoon from HMS 'Encounter', circa 1914.
Plated tablespoon of plain fiddle pattern. The ship's name 'HMS ENCOUNTER' and the monogram 'WR' are engraved on the handle, and surmounted by a naval crown.
HMS 'Encounter was a light cruiser built in 1902 and scuttled off Sydney in 1932. The spoon probably dates from before 1914, or during World War I, and is likely to be part of a set used in the Ward Room (hence 'WR') and purchased privately by the officers.
