Silver commemoration cigarette box

Silver cigarette box, commemorating the Battleship HMS 'King George V' (1911), given to King George V (1865-1936) by his mother Queen Alexandra (1844-1925).

The silver box is rectangular with feet at the corners and has a hinged lid. The lid and all four sides are decorated with relief panels showing: HMS 'King George V' super dreadnought (top); ships of the Armada in action(front); Blake's ship 'St George' off Santa Cruz (back); Tudor Royal Standard as at the time of the Armada (the left side); contemporary Royal Standard (right side). The box has a boxwood lining with a removable wooden division.

The box was given to the NMM by Queen Mary after George V's death. Inside is a note on black-bordered notepaper with George V's monogram: 'This silver box was made by the celebrated jeweller and silversmith Carl Faberge in St Petersburgh and was given to King George V by Queen Alexandra - it is to be kept in the Museum at Greenwich. 1936'.
