Silver commemoration salver

Salver commemorating the launch of HMIS 'Kistna, 1943.

Oblong silver launching salver with a reeded rim and two reeded handles, depicting HMIS 'Kistna' at sea, named on the stern.

It is inscribed: 'H.M.I.S.KISTNA. LAUNCHED 22ND APRIL 1943 FROM YARROW & CO'S SHIPYARD SCOTSTOUN'.

The salver was presented to Mrs Godfrey, wife of Admiral J. H. Godfrey, when she launched the Indian Navy ship 'Kistna'. She presented it to the NMM in 1980, together with an ornamental launching mallet used on the same occasion (PLT0219).

HMIS ‘Kistna’ was a Modified Black Swan Class Sloop of the Royal Indian Navy, built by Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd at Scotstoun, Scotland. She was laid down on 14 July 1942, launched on 22 April 1943 and commissioned on 26 August the same year. She was finally scrapped in 1980.

Admiral J. H. Godfrey (1888-1971) was Director of Naval Intelligence in 1939.
