Captain Webb memorial shield
Captain Webb memorial shield for team swimming. It was presented to HMS 'Conway'. It has a relief portrait of Captain Matthew Webb (1848-83), the first man to swim the channel. Engraved underneath the relief are the words "CAPT MATTHEW WEBB BORN 1848 DIED 1883 SWAM DOVE CALAIS 1875". In 1910 The Committee of the Webb Memorial Fund presented this memorial plaque as a challenge shield for team swimming events to HMS Conway.
