Silver trophy presented to HMMV 'Winchester Castle', 1931, by Amy Johnson, the aviator (1903-41).
Silver cup with angular double handles, and a bulbous rim, standing on a raised cirular foot. It is inscribed: 'Presented by MISS AMY JOHNSON TO THE SPORTS CLUB OF R.M.M.V. "WINCHESTER CASTLE" FOR ANNUAL COMPETITION.'
RMMV 'Winchester Castle', 20,000 tons, was built by Harland & Wolff in 1930. She was part of Union Castle's mail service between Southampton and the Cape and later, during World War II, she served as a troopship and then an assault ship, and in 1949 returned to the mail service.
