P&O: Oval platter
An electroplated oval platter used by the Peninsular & Oriental Steamship Navigation Company. The platter is badly scratched with a semi-obliterated P&O 'rising sun' crest on the rim. The underside of the dish is not plated. An aluminium plaque is fixed to the rim with two brass pins. Engraved on the plaque are the words "S.S. ORFORD, SUNK BY BOMBING IN MARSEILLES HARBOUR 1ST JUNE 1940". The maker's marks are engraved on the base of the platter.
