Silver Admiralty Marshal's mace, 1794.
Silver Admiralty Marshal's mace, 1794.
The mace comprises a narrow shaft with three bands, decorated on the top section with a foul anchor in relief. Another foul anchor is incised as a seal on the flat base of the shaft. At the top of the shaft, over a circular medallion engraved with the pre-1801 Hanoverian Royal coat of arms, is a three-dimensional open Royal Crown. The lower part of the crown is inscribed: 'EVAN JONES, MARSHAL OF THE HIGH COURT OF ADMIRALTY OF ENGLAND, 1850'.
Oar maces were ceremonial symbols of authority used in the Admiralty courts.
