Silver arm badge

Arm badge (brassard) awarded as a prize in the Royal Regatta, 1865, and attached to the sleeve of prize coat.

Oval silver badge decorated in relief with a head and shoulders portrait of Prince Alfred, later Duke of Edinburgh, wearing a suit, collar and tie. The portrait is surrounded by laurel sprays tied below with a ribbon. Inscribed above the portrait: 'ROYAL REGATTA TO COMMEMORATE THE COMING OF AGE OF PRINCE ALFRED AUGUST 7TH 1865'. Below the portrait inscribed: 'THOS. CANNON MANAGER WM. BOWLER TREASURER'.

It was won by William Taylor, the donor's grandfather, together with a silver-buttoned red waterman's coat, also donated to the collection (UNI3652). Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900) was the 2nd son of Queen Victoria.
