Marble cross part

Part of a marble cross (broken in two pieces) and a silver plaque now detached. The plate is inscribed: 'Bartholomeu Diaz A.D. 1486 when prosecuting that voyage in which he discovered the Cape of Good Hope, erected in Angra Piquena a marble cross. This slab is a fragment of it taken from the spot by Captain Videl when surveying the western coast of Africa in Nov. 1825 and is by him presented to his faithful and affectionate friend Captain W.F.W. Owen RN, under whose able direction both coasts of the continent were examined and surveyed in the year 1823, 24, 25, & 26'.
