State funeral ticket
An example of a ticket for Nelson’s state funeral on 9 January 1806. The funeral procession gathered in Hyde Park. Holders of tickets such as REL0788 would have been able to join the procession in the Park. From there the cortege made its way to St Paul’s, where the holder of this type of ticket would already have been seated.
The ticket bears the wax seal of the Bishop of London and the ticket is signed by the Bishop of Lincoln (Dean of St Paul’s) George Pretyman Tomline (1750-1824). Inscribed: 'Funeral of Lord Nelson ST. PAUL'S, Jan. 9, 1806 ADMIT THE BEARER AT THE SOUTH DOOR, TO THE GALLERIES UNDER THE DOME G. Lincoln Dean This Ticket not to be delivered to any Doorkeeper.'
