Constable's staff
A constable's staff made from a spoke of Nelson's funeral carriage. Oak turned and grooved around the handle. It has a partially illegible handwritten label adhering to it: 'Greenwich College...1841...Constable at ...G... I turned the staff out of a spoke of the wheel...and I have done duty with this staff at Greenwich...' With a loop of rope and tassel to suspend from the wrist. Carved with the initials 'GH' with a badge of a crown with crossed flags above and an anchor below (Greenwich Hospital). The carriage was kept in the Painted Hall until it fell into bad repair in 1826.
