Boots, Finnesko
One of a pair of boots used on Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-14. Worn stuffed with Saenegras or manilla fibre and with several pairs of socks. Reindeer hide boots with the fur on the outside. The foot formed from the upper part of the reindeer's head, with the ear and eye openings sewn up. Additional pelt added to form moccasin type upper and ankle. At join of upper and sole red and yellow material (latter pinked) added, with a strand of turquoise chain stitched in. Top of boot has an additional piece of leather through which draw string passes, rough multicoloured tassels, red yellow turqoise and mauve. Beneath this a piece of red felt with pinked yellow woollen material above. (Wrong photo).
