Rudder fragment from H.M. Armed Vessel 'Bounty'
A fragment of timber, reportedly from the rudder of H.M. Armed Vessel 'Bounty'. The fragment is severely discoloured.
Part of 'Bounty's' rudder - a 1 metre long piece of timber with the copper bands still intact, was retrieved from the sea off Pitcairn in 1933. The Chief Magistrate of Pitcairn, Mr Parkin Christian, reported this to the High Commissioner for the Western Pacific. The information was forwarded to the Colonial Office for transmission to the Admiralty whose property it still was. The Admiralty thought its should remain on Pitcairn and it was kept for a while in the Post Office. By 1942, it was getting in the way, and was shipped to Fiji for safe keeping. It remains there in the Fiji Museum at Suva, Fiji.
