H.M.S. 'Resolution' sternpost fragment
A fragment of the sternpost of HMS 'Resolution' 1770. A rough piece of timber which is one of the pieces of the ship which were kept as souvenirs in Newport Rhode Island. The ship ran aground there in the 1790s and was left to decay. The rest of the sternpost from which this fragment was cut is displayed (2004) in the Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney, having previously been acquired, like the NMM fragment, from the Newport Rhode Island Historical Society. Note that at one point it was thought to be from 'Endeavour' which also eventually went to pieces there. (See 'The Great Circle: Journal of the Australian Association for Maritime History', Vol 19, no 1, 1997)
