H.M.S. 'Immortalite' ensign staff
Gilt ball and ensign staff from HMS 'Immortalite'. It has a glazed framed label attached to it. ‘8745. Gilt ball from the ensign staff of HMS "Immortalite" - Captain Sir E. Chichester. This ball was in position when the British cruiser steamed in between the U.S. squadron under Admiral Dewey and the German squadron under Admiral Dietrich on August 13th, 1898' off Manila City. The American fleet had come to silence the coast batteries of Manila and to cover the advance of their troops. Admiral Dietrich threatened to oppose any American bombardment. Captain Chichester's forceful intervention prevented an international incident which would have resulted in grave consequences. Given by:- Surgeon Rear-Admiral T.T. Jeans, C.M.G'.
