Pivot suspension support
Kelvin's "Mattress Suspension" extensively used with their light dry card compass about the time of the Second World War to reduce the effects of vibration. The pivot holder is attached to two discs of copper gauze, each 8.2cm dia. secured by eight screws to a black, painted brass ring; 9.9cm dia. which fits in the bottom of the bowl.
