Wood carving made from wood of H.M.S. 'Victory'

A rather primitive wood carving showing a figure of Nelson standing on a plinth and leaning on an anchor with a coil of rope beside it. There is a recumbrant lion at his feet. On the base, a pointing female figure with two small boys. The figures are carved separately and pegged together. The composition is loosely based on Flaxman's Nelson monument at St Paul's Cathedral with Britannia indicating Nelson as an example to two midshipmen. 'NILE. COPE. TRAF' is carved round the plinth. A hand written label attached to the plinth states' 'This is a piece of the wreckage of 'The Victory' at Battle of Trafalgar was taken care of and carved by one who was with Nelson in 3 engagements and who afterwards lived in Twickenham'.
