John Flamsteed (1646-1719)

Head-and-part-shoulders resin bust of the Revd John Flamsteed, first Astronomer Royal from 1675 to 1719, in cold-cast bronzed resin, mounted on a square plinth of green Westmorland stone with the gilded cut-letter inscription 'FLAMSTEED' on the front face, and signed 'G. Elliott sculpt.' on the right side. The base is baize-lined on the underside.

Flamsteed is shown facing forward, wearing a full wig behind rather than over the shoulders, and clerical bands.

The original bust, carved in Tisbury stone, was commissoned by the Royal Greenwich Observatory, then housed at Herstmonceux, Sussex, to mark its tercentenary in 1975 (ZBA1712). A mould was made from it, from which a bronze version was cast for presentation to the Royal Society and this copy, before the mould was destroyed.

Elliott's sources for the likeness of Flamsteed were the ivory relief by David le Marchand and George Vertue's engraving after the oil portrait by Thomas Gibson.
