Commodore James Graham Goodenough (1830-75)
Head-and-shoulders marble bust of Commodore James Graham Goodenough, head slightly turned to sitter's right, the hair parted on the right and long side-whiskers. It stands cemented on a square base inscribed ' JAMES GRAHAM GOODENOUGH. / C.B.- C.M.G., / CAPTAIN AND COMMODORE / ROYAL NAVY' and is signed on the back ' G. 1877'.
Goodenough is shown wearing a evening suit jacket and cravat, with miniature decorations on the left breast, and a cape or coat draped over the right shoulder and under the left arm. The decorations are those of the CB, CMG, the Baltic Medal and the medal for the Second China War. The last two represent Goodenough's service at the bombardment of Sweaborg (Finland) in the Crimean War and, in the China War, at Fatshan Creek and at the taking of Canton and of the Taku Forts, 1857-58.
The bust was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1878 and was presented to Greenwich Hospital by the Committee for the Goodenough Memorial Fund in 1879. The text on the pedestal reads: 'WHILE IN COMMAND OF THE / AUSTRALIAN STATION / HE DIED AT SEA ON BOARD HER MAJESTY'S SHIP "PEARL" / AUGUST 10TH 1875, / AGED 44 YEARS / OF ARROW WOUNDS RECEIVED FROM THE NATIVES / OF THE ISLAND OF SANTA CRUZ / WITH WHOM HE WAS ENDEAVOURING TO OPEN / FRIENDLY RELATIONS /---/ THIS BUST IS PLACED IN THE PAINTED HALL, GREENWICH, / AND A GOODENOUGH MEMORIAL MEDAL / FOR NAVAL GUNNERY INSTITUTED / BY SOME OF THOSE / WHO LOVED AND RESPECTED HIM / IN ORDER THAT A LIFE DEVOTED TO DUTY / AND ANIMATED BY THE LOVE OF GOD / MAY BE REMEMBERED BY THE PROFESSION HE ADORNED / AND / BY THE COUNTRY HE SERVED.' This is one of four works by Gleichen in the collection, comprising two other busts and a plaster statuette (SCU0003, SCU0050 and SCU0069).
This bust is currently (2010) on display in 'Discover Greenwich', the World Heritage Site visitor centre at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich.
