Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) as a child

Art Nouveau-style head-and-part-shoulders bust of a child, possible Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson facing forward with shoulder length hair, on a square socle. Though made of plaster it has been painted to resemble terracotta.

The plinth at the base of the socle is inscribed 'HORATIO NELSON' and there is a dated monogram signature on the sitter's left side below the shoulder which appears to be 'O.B. / 83'.

While in no way a credible portrait of Nelson as a child it is an attractive piece and an interesting period conception of 'the hero as infant'.The initials might be those of a sculptor called Oscar Berg who exhibited a single work called 'The First Step' - presumably also of a child subject - at the Royal Academy in 1883 from the Primrose Hill Studios, London. However, this is based on no more than his being the only sculptor with those initials listed in Graves' 'R.A. Exhibitors' and nothing else is known of him.
