Second seal of the corporation of Winchelsea, early 14th century

Obverse of the second seal of the corporation of Winchelsea, early 14th century. Legend: 'SIGILLVM : BARONVM : DOMINI : REGIS : ANGLIE : DE : WINCHELLESE'. It depicts an early fourteenth-century sailing vessel with a quarter-rudder slung on the starboard side. In the bow two men are hauling on the anchor cable which runs aft to a windlass worked by two other men. This is the earliest representation of a windlass on a seal. The cast is mounted on an emulsioned plywood backboard with a label.
