First common seal of the town of Folkestone, late 13th century. It depicts a late thirteenth-century sailing vessel, showing an early form of fighting stages – short platforms on posts inside the ends of the hull, set up temporarily in ships in time of war. Inscription: 'SIGILL' BARONVM FOLKESTANIE'. The cast is mounted on an emulsioned plywood backboard with a label.
