Dublin, common seal, 1297
Dublin, common seal, 1297. Depicting a late thirteenth-century sailing vessel. The sail is unusual in northern medieval art in being apparently made up of square cloths, like those of ancient Roman ships. Three rows of reef points on the reef bands are clearly seen. Inscription: 'SIGILL(VM : COM)MV(NE : CIVIVM : DVB)LINIE'. The cast is mounted on an emulsioned plywood backboard with a label.
