John Holland, seal of office, 1421

John Holland (1395-1447), first seal as Admiral of England, Ireland and Aquitaine, 1421. It depicts an early fifteenth century sailing vessel, with the cross of St George on pennons at mast-head and bow. An admiral's lantern is shown on a staff in the stern.The sail of the ship bears the arms of the Holland family - the arms of England and a bordure of France. At the stern, a banner indented per pale. Inscription: 'S'IOHIS COMITIS HUNTINGDON LOCUTENTIS GEN'RAL' IOHIS DUCIS BED : ADMIRALL'ANG : HIBN ET ACQUITANIE'. The cast is mounted on an emulsioned plywood backboard with a label.
