Sir William Hylton, seal of office, 14th century. It depicts a fourteenth century sailing vessel. A Jacob's ladder leading to the top is shown just aft of the fighting top. A pennon in the bow bears St George's Cross. this is the earliest known illustration of an admiral's lantern. Inscription: 'WILLM . HYLTON . MILES . ADMIRALLS . PRO . LOCO . HUB'RE . USQ . AD . SCOCIA'. The cast is mounted on an emulsioned plywood backboard with a label.
