Medallion of Gordianus III, 242 AD
Cast of a medallion of Gordianus III, 242 AD. Two casts obverse and reverse. Obverse: Portrait of Gordianus. Legend: 'IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FELIX AVG'. Reverse: A war galley with two standards under oars. Inscription: 'TRAIECTVS AVG'. It commemorates Gordian's transport of his army, escorted by the imperial fleet, from Misenum and Ravenna to the east for the war against Persia. The original is in the British Museum. The casts are mounted on an emulsioned plywood backboard with a label.
